Abarth

Carlo Abarth established Abarth in 1949 after purchasing the assets of the failing Cisitalia. For the launch of his new business, Abarth acquired five 204 sports cars, a D46 single seater, and assorted parts.

Italian-Austrian Carlo Abarth established the road and racing automobile manufacturer Abarth & C. S.p.A. in 1949. On a red and yellow backdrop, its logo has a shield with a stylised scorpion on it.

Abarth & C. S.p.A. is a wholly owned subsidiary of FCA Italy S.p.A. (formerly known as Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.), a division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (previously known as Fiat S.p.A.), which oversees the company's European car manufacturing operations.

Abarth achieved success in hillclimbing and sports car racing in the 1960s, mostly in 850cc to 2000cc classes, where it competed against Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino. From 1962 through 1965, Hans Herrmann drove for a factory team. He and Teddy Pilette won the 500 km Nürburgring in 1963.

Abarth was sold by Carlo to Fiat on July 31, 1971. Fiat just announced the acquisition in a press statement on October 15th. Enzo Osella took over the Reparto Corse racing activities when Fiat expressed little interest in them.

Osella established the Osella racing team after acquiring vehicles, spare parts, mechanics, and drivers (including Arturo Merzario). The days of Abarth's sport prototype and hill climb racing came to an end in this manner.
