Understanding SAE Standards

SAE International, formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a global association of over 128,000 engineers and technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle industries. SAE International is the world’s leading authority in mobility standards development, with its standards used in aerospace and ground vehicles.

SAE standards are used to improve safety, productivity, dependability, efficiency and certification.

SAE Standard

SAE International has several publications, including Automotive Engineering International, Aerospace Engineering, and Off Highway Engineering, and hosts over 450 professional development events annually.

SAE also provides ratings for automobile horsepower and has proposed an influential categorization for "levels of driving automation" in vehicular automation.

The SAE standards are used to improve safety, productivity, dependability, efficiency, and certification in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries.

Here are some of the key aspects of SAE standards:

Technical Standards:

SAE International provides a forum for companies, government agencies, research institutions, and consultants to devise technical standards and recommended practices for the design, construction, and characteristics of motor vehicle components.

Aerospace Industry Standards:

SAE publishes technical documents for the aerospace industry, including Aerospace Recommended Practices and Aerospace Information Reports.

Levels of Autonomy:

SAE has proposed an influential categorization for "levels of driving automation" in vehicular automation, ranging from level 0 (No Driving Automation) to level 5 (Full Automation).

Horsepower Ratings:

SAE has long provided standards for rating automobile horsepower, including SAE gross power and SAE net power.

Publications:

SAE International publishes technical information, industry magazines, and books on various technical subjects, including automotive engineering, aerospace engineering, and off-highway engineering.

SAE Foundation:

In 1986, SAE International established the SAE Foundation to support science and technology education, particularly in the areas of mathematics, technology, engineering, and science.

STEM Program:

The SAE Foundation offers a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program called "A World in Motion" that brings science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to life in the classroom for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

SAE Collegiate Design Series:

The SAE Collegiate Design Series provides an opportunity for college students to go beyond textbook theory and replicate the process of engineering design and manufacturing.

Here are some of the SAE standards:

  • SAE J3016: defines six levels of automation for cars, ranging from level 0 (No Driving Automation) to level 5 (Full Automation)

  • SAE JA1002: unknown

  • SAE J1269: Standard test of tire rolling resistance

  • SAE J1939: Network protocol

  • SAE J2450: Translation Quality Metric

  • SAE J2452: unknown
