Proton
Malaysian automaker and corporation Proton Holdings Berhad (PHB; colloquially known as "Proton") engages in the design, production, distribution, and sale of automobiles. Up to the establishment of Perodua in 1993, Proton was the only national vehicle manufacturer in Malaysia. The business has its main office in Shah Alam, Selangor, and also maintains operations in Proton City, Perak.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Proton produced rebadged versions of Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) products. In the year 2000, Proton built its first locally designed (albeit Mitsubishi-powered), non-badge engineered automobile, making Malaysia the 11th nation in the world with the ability to create cars from scratch. Proton has manufactured a variety of domestically and badge-engineered automobiles during the 2000s. At least 15 nations presently sell Proton automobiles, the most of which are in Asia. Up until 2016, the United Kingdom was Proton's largest export market.
HICOM formerly controlled the majority of Proton, with members of the Mitsubishi Group owning the remaining minority holdings. By 2005, Mitsubishi had sold Khazanah Nasional its portion in Proton, and in 2012, DRB-HICOM had bought the entire company from Mitsubishi. From 1996 to 2017, Proton was the proprietor of Lotus Cars. DRB-HICOM made intentions to sell Geely Automobile Holdings a 49.9% share in Proton and a 51% stake in Lotus in May 2017. Since the contract was signed in June 2017, Lotus has no longer been a part of Proton.
