Isdera (Ingenieurbüro für Styling, Design und Racing) is a prestigious German automobile manufacturer, known for its bespoke, high-performance sports cars. Founded in 1982 by Eberhard Schulz in Leonberg, Germany, Isdera has built a reputation for crafting unique, hand-built vehicles that combine cutting-edge technology with meticulous craftsmanship.
Early Beginnings and Innovations
The origins of Isdera can be traced back to 1969 when Eberhard Schulz built his own car, the Erator GTE, in his garage. This prototype caught the attention of major automotive companies, leading Schulz to work for Porsche in their design department. In 1978, Schulz left Porsche and joined the b&b company, where he designed the Mercedes-Benz CW311 concept, a car that would later inspire Isdera's first production model.
Iconic Models
Isdera's first car, the Spyder, was introduced in 1982. This open-top sports car was based on the CW311 and featured a modified Mercedes-Benz inline-4 engine. In 1984, Isdera launched the Imperator 108i, a production version of the CW311 concept. The Imperator 108i was powered by a range of Mercedes-Benz V8 engines and was known for its advanced aerodynamics and performance.
In 1993, Isdera unveiled the Commendatore 112i, a successor to the Imperator 108i. The Commendatore 112i featured a mid-mounted Mercedes-Benz 6.0 L V12 engine, capable of producing 408 PS (300 kW; 402 hp). This model was notable for its innovative features, including two sets of gull-wing doors, a velocity-sensitive electronic chassis, and an automatic air brake. The Commendatore 112i could accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in 4.0 seconds and had a top speed of 342 km/h (213 mph).
