Hommell was a French automobile manufacturer founded in 1990 by Michel Hommell, a former racing driver and the owner of the French car magazine, Échappement. The company was based in Lohéac, Ille-et-Vilaine, France, and quickly gained attention for its innovative sports cars.

Early Beginnings and Innovations
Michel Hommell's passion for racing and automotive design led to the creation of the Hommell brand. The company's first prototype, a sports car, was showcased at the 1990 Paris Salon, where it received positive feedback. Encouraged by this response, Hommell decided to proceed with production. The first production model, the Hommell Berlinette Échappement, was unveiled at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show. This two-seat sports coupe featured a mid-mounted 2.0-liter Peugeot engine and a six-speed gearbox, housed in a tubular steel chassis with all-round independent suspension.

Expansion and Models
In 1998, Hommell introduced the Barquette, an open-top version of the Berlinette. At the same time, the original Berlinette was updated and renamed the Berlinette RS, featuring a more powerful Citroën engine. The Berlinette RS was followed by the Berlinette RS2 in 2001, which boasted even greater performance with a 195 bhp engine.

Challenges and Closure
Despite the innovative designs and positive reception, Hommell faced financial difficulties. The company struggled to achieve mass production and maintain profitability. In December 2003, Hommell ceased production due to financial constraints. There were attempts by Chinese investors in 2005 to acquire the plans for the Berlinette and produce it in Shanghai, but no agreement was reached1.
