The vehicle division of the publicly traded Chinese multinational manufacturer BYD Company, with its headquarters in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, is called BYD Auto Co., Ltd. ("Build Your Dreams"). After Qinchuan Automobile Company was purchased by BYD Company in 2002, it was established in January 2003. The firm manufactures forklifts, electric bicycles, electric buses, lorries, passenger automobiles, and rechargeable batteries. Battery electric cars (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are included in the current model range of automobiles, although the firm also produced vehicles with gasoline engines up to March 2022.

With a global market share of 9.1% for plug-in electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) and 7% for BEVs as of 2021, BYD was the fourth-largest BEV firm in the world. The firm has mostly centered its sales in Mainland China, but it is rapidly expanding into the worldwide market, with sales expected to reach over 100,000 per month in March 2022 and 1.5 million to 2 million plug-in EVs sold, which would be around 3 to 4 times as many as were sold in 2021. BYD Auto stated in June 2022 that it has surpassed Tesla to become the world's largest EV manufacturer, having sold roughly 641,000 EVs in the first half of 2022.
In September 2022, it achieved 1,000,000 NEV sales in a calendar year, becoming it the first automaker in the world to do so.

The firm also includes an electric battery branch called FinDreams Battery, which focuses mostly on lithium iron phosphate batteries and is the third-largest producer of electric car batteries in the world with a worldwide market share of 12% in the first half of 2022.
